We are a food pantry that shares a week's worth of healthy & nutritional food items
with individuals and families with incomes below 150% of the poverty level.
We are housed in the basement of St. John the Evangelist Church, 611 Main St.,
South Portland. We have a 501 3C non profit status, are 100% volunteer, and are
helping well over 300 families a month. We are open on Thursday mornings, have
over 50 volunteers, and with the help of a caring community have plenty of food to
share.
This is a labor of love for all of us who volunteer here. We do more than food.
We have coffee and pastries for clients when they first come in. We have free
children 's books , magazines to read while waiting. We share a week's worth of
food for up to 4 individuals in the household, we deliver to 15 disabeled seniors in
South Portland once a month. We have a "help" desk that shares information on
where to find other services ie: clothing, oil, medical, etc. and how and where to
access computers and information on the internet. We have Christmas gifts during
December, Easter baskets for the children in the Spring,, and at times, clothing,
coats, blankets and miscellaneous items. Our food items include milk, frozen juice,
cereal, soup, tuna, peanut butter jelly, pancake mix, cocoa, pasta, beans, mac &
cheese, tomato products, rice, canned vegetables, canned fruit, frozen meat,
paper towels, toilet tissue, facial tissue, fresh vegetables( potatoes, onions, carrot
s, apples, & banannas) eggs, bread, pastries. and more. Clients choose & receive
a lot of food, and our men take their grocery bags to their cars and load for them I
t is a lot of friendly service for as we all know" it could be us tomorrow".
